Cultural Wayshowing
In such a multicultural and diverse world, people still suffer the injustices of hate crimes, racial violence, discrimination, and intolerance. Our group decided to design ways for people to use technology in public spaces to become more aware and accept the diversity in the world around them. These designs, then, would help to combat some of the hate and injustices that are in the world today.
The How
We first began by going out into the public downtown area of Bloomington to learn about the atmosphere and what types of signs and markers are out in the wild that people would notice. We then took pictures documenting our journey and our observations. From there, we started to sketch concepts of how we could help to foster an atmosphere that would help people to accept and embrace the differences that make us unique.
We came up with many different concepts that we presented and iterated upon. We first sketched out concepts that utilized public displays and mosaics that would allow people to see what makes everyone unique, and the combination of everyone’s differences creates for a better world. We also sketched out concepts that would allow people to embrace the traditions of other cultures and participate in them. We also sketched contemplative journeys for people to walk through and allow people to reflect and embrace new traditions in a personal manner. After sketching our concepts, we created Photoshop mockups to allow people to see our ideas become closer to reality.
Our final presentation and concepts can be found by looking at our presentation.
