Space junk exhibit

Background

Space junk is the debris floating around space from human exploration. It is a slowly accumulating problem that affects space travel; as the junk continues to stay in orbit, astronauts have to worry about collisions and other safety problems.

This project is a museum installation set to help people see this problem in a very fun way - by giving people a story in a museum exhibit to understand how large of a problem space junk is.

What I learned

  • People can suspend their disbelief when helping to run through a prototype
  • It is important to run through a usability test a couple of times to make sure the study is ready to go
  • Impairments can come in any form and it is important to design with them in mind for an accessible experience
  • Any prototyping efforts lead to useful design insights

Design Methods

  • Autoethnography
  • Sketching
  • Wizard-of-Oz prototyping
  • Usability testing
